The Sherline Machinist's Challenge contest will once again be held at NAMES. As always, there is no requirement that Sherline tools be used in the building of the entry. It just has to meet the size requirements. The project must fit within 64 cubic inches (1049 cubic cm) of volume or approximately a 4" (10.2 cm) cube. Cubic shape limits are not strictly required, and a single dimension of up to 6" (15.2 cm) is allowed as long as the volume requirement is not exceeded An article will appear soon in The Home Shop Machinist with the rules, but you can find them now at . Last year only 5 people entered 7 projects, and we are hoping for a lot more this year so we can continue holding this contest in the future. Please tell everyone to get a project together, whether they plan to attend the show or not. I can take them with me for display. It doesn't have to be as complicated as an engine, but nice finishes and unique or complicated projects seem to do the best in the judging. Thank you for helping spread the word.
    Craig Libuse
Count me in for 2 entries this year. I have 1 ready and will have the other ready this week.

    One other detail from Sherline
Please also remind people in your group about our Foundation's Young Artisan Scholarship program if they have a talented young person who needs some financial assistance to attend a trade school to learn a mechanical skill. The contest entry is the portfolio and could net them $5000 toward school. Ben Roth won it last year. He is attending North Dakota School of Mines this year with the help of $5000 from our donor. Please see .

IF you have small engines and are going to NAMES please consider entering this event.
Hello David......Are you going to the NAMES show this year ?? If you are , I am wondering if we (FAME MEMBERS) could set up a time for few minutes of face to face meeting.....It is always nice to say hello to members that we have emailed over the last few years.....It does not have to take up much time..... Just set up a time and place (sherline booth), or any place that will be easy to find.....Anyone have thoughts , yes / no.....Dale Detrich
I would like to put some faces to names and get to shake hands with some of the best model builders, I intend to attend, me and Paul Bennett belong to the Bay Area Modeling Club in San Francisco CA. I have convinced him of joining me in the trip, would love to get to meet those ones who may attend NAMES.

So if anyone who knows the lay of the land can come with some place and time, we will be there.

    Best regards.
Hello All.......What if we (FAME)Members meet at the Shirline booth area at 1:00 PM on Saturday......It will be "nice" to meet all of the people that we have been in contact with over the years.....Fame seems to be a "great" site for the model engineer to be a part of.....Thanks for David K. for all of his efforts to keep FAME up and running......So sound off if the Shirline area is OK , or if you have a idea where to meet......Dale
    I'll see you there!
    I'll see you there!
So the Sherline booth it is 1:00 PM Saturday.

Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Does anyone know what time the show starts? Is there a dock to unload stuff? Also where is the closest place to stay?
    Thanks ,
    Steve Bushman
Steve.....If you want, you can send me your email address to me Dale Detrich at and I will scan the show information and send it to you.....Yes there is a dock, located at the back of the seagate center....There are people to help unload......There is a list of places to stay, and all of the good stuff about the show.....Anyone else need the information, please send me your email address and I will send it to you also......Dale Detrich

Hello Dale or should I call you uncle Dale, Ha Ha

I would like to go to your show. Do you have room for me? I'm coming from N.J. I would love to go.

    Take care Dale,

    Rick D

PS, I Met your wife at caben fever 2006. She is a very nice lady. I talked to her for about fifteen mins.
    Hi Uncle Dale!

If you need the extra room I could see if Bob Shutt has a little room on his table for me and we could get the Peewees together. That would free up some room on your table. If not, I could get a table of my own and make room for someone else with me.

This way we all get some room!
Hope to meet you all at the show. Sherline booth at 1:00 on Saturday sounds good. Rick- I agree with your comment on Dale's wife. Too bad she hangs around with Dale all the time!
    :- ) Ron Colonna
Ron.....There is a saying that behind every successful man there is a woman.......Jan and I have been been around each other for 49+ years, and without Jan behind me I would "Not" be where I am today.....It is nice to have some one that backs almost all the things that I care to do.......We are going to Toledo Thursday afternoon and I will ask some of the NAMES officers if we can spread out to save space for the people that are coming Saturday morning....Ron are you going to be at the same area , as you were in "07" ?? Do you have the engine finished for
the show ?? I am looking forward to meeting all of the names that we see on the message board See you soon "at the show"........Dale
Dale: I know what you mean about a good woman. It's been 40 years for me and my wife. She too backs " almost" everything I care to do. I will be where I can find a spot when we get there on Friday afternoon. Due to health problems, the Novi isn't finished, but I am going to display what there is of it. No matter where I set up I'll be around to torment you and Jan. Lets hope the show is bigger and better. I think the economy has been a factor on attendance the last couple of years. At least the price of gasoline is down a bit from then. Cabin Fever was packed in January. Hopefully that is an indication of what this show will be like as well. See you soon. Ron Colonna

    Hello Dale and all others,

I did not mean to push myself on you guys. I'm very sorry about that. I don't think I going to go. I hope you all have a great show.

See you guys later, Rick D
Hello Rick D..........You did not push anything on us......We would love to see you and your "stuff".......There is a lots of room for everyone, do not let that bother you.....The Seagate Center is a big place and there is plenty of room.....Please come over to the show, and join us at the Sherline area....I am sure that if you liked Cabin Fever show that you will like the NAMES show....And you can talk to the "nice" lady again.....Dale.....BTW she said to tell you hello...
Cmon Rick! The more the marryer! It is a great weekend!

Anybody know how to spell marryer?
Steve: It's" merrier." And I agree. There has never been a problem finding room for anyone. We even managed when things were really crowded at the Names shows held at the old Dominos Farms in Ann Arbor. How many of you remember those? Usually we have had the opposite problem lately. Too much room and not enough exhibitors. Let's all go and have some fun. Ron Colonna

I wish I could come and be with all of you at the show this year.
To many things happening at work (good thing now) to get away.
Have a great show and please take photos for those of us who are stuck at home.
Just got back from the show. It was very good this year. The V8 Co2 engine took a first in class and a third over all in the sherline contest. Shocked me because I thought at least 5 entries were better than mine.
Steve: Never under estimate your talents! It was a good show. I can tell by how worn out I feel now that it's over. Or maybe I'm just feeling my age? Good buddy Dale took some photos. Jan kept him in line and busy cranking over his never ending number of new creations. Dale-where do you get your ambition? Mine has about worn out. Saturday was very busy. Today I had a little trouble with my Harley engine. My son and I had to do minor surgery to get it back in running order. A piece of string or should I say thread, got into the main jet of the carb. The carb is a bit complex and had to be completely torn down to locate the problem. It ran better than ever once put back together. I wonder how long that gremlin has been around? I never could seem to hold an adjustment on that carb. Works perfectly now. If you didn't go or couldn't make it- you missed a good time with great people. Ron Colonna
Hello Steve, Ron and all....Jan and I had a quiet trip home ( 55 miles ), stopped and had dinner on the way home.....When we got the van in the garage, we both stalled down , and had a quiet evening.....I cleaned up 116 emails and that was it for the evening.....AS on said, the being tird and the age goes hand in hand......We are "glad' for Steve's winning ways in the sherline contest........Will down load some pictures of the show............Dale

It Was a good show. Good job Steve. Dale, it was a good thing you showed back up with the van because Jan and I were about to take off in the 1901 olds.......Bob
Thanks Ron, Dale, and Bob. Words like that from guy's like you are priceless. Bad part about showing your stuff is you cant go see everybody elses stuff. Next year I'm going to setup where I can see your tables better. Then I wont miss out when the Offy fires up!

Dale, I never saw the T2 run. If you get it going again, send me a video!

Dale Detrich has provided a large group of photos from NAMES 2009. Looks like it was another interesting show. They are in the Events/Shows menu at the left of the display under NAMES 2009 or you can go direct to ->link<- .
If anyone else has photos they want to share please send them to me. Limit e-mails to 5MB.
Thanks for the nice set of pictures from NAMES! ! ! !
    I really enjoied them

Who's the ugly guy in the white shirt!

    Thanks for the pictures!!!
Hello All......As Steve said about showing your "stuff" at the show.....You have very little time to look around during the show, so you do not have much time to visit or take pictures.....I tried to include some pictures of the people of the show, and show a few of the people behind the engines....I have the advantage of my wife Jan, who does the show and tell about the guns....This gives me time to show and run the engines, and talk to the people who have questions about the engines.....It also allows me the time to get a few pictures....I would like to start at one end of a show and take a picture of everything at the show, and include the names and faces of the people showing their "stuff".....I am going to try to do this at the MID-EAST OHIO MODEL ENGINEERING EXPO. to be held at Zanesville , Ohio this October 24th......I am looking forward to go to the show, and seeing our friends there.....I am going to scan the sheet that was handed out at the NAMES show, so if anyone wants the information about the show please get in touch, and I will send you the information that I have .....Thanks.......Dale Detrich
